Starting School
My oldest granddaughter started kindergarten on Monday. I talked with her on the phone at the end of the day and asked how she liked the first day of school. She said, "It was a really long day." She has the privilege of attending an all-day kindergarten where they live in California. Compared to her 2 1/2 hour preschool last year, I am sure it seemed like a long day. My hope is that her teacher can provide engaging activities that will make the long day into an incredible day of learning. I have been in half-day kindergarten classes that are about as exciting as watching cement harden. I can't imagine what they would be like with twice as much time. The hours of kindergarten are so important and the children are so precious that it is essential kindergarten teachers keep the children engaged and excited about learning. That is my hope for my granddaughter. I guess I will be able to tell when I ask her in a few weeks about kindergarten. If she says, "It's a really long day," I will begin to worry.

When I heard your story about your oldest granddaughter, I thought of my nephew, my husband's sisters oldest child, he just started kindergarden this year and my Mother-in-Law talks to him on the phone as well. The last phone conversation she asked how Kindergarden was and he answered, "I'm ready for it to be done." and I believe this was just the end of the first week of him attending.
His name is Wyatt, and one of the smartest kids I've ever met. When his bady sister would stay up at night time, he asked his parents if she was nocturnal. We all get pretty suprised sometimes by his smarts and hope Kindergarden doesn't bore him out of his mind.

Deanna Zilth from class says thanks for the article. My nephew Chandler says that school is fun lets hope its fun all year long.
When I read your story about your granddaughter it reminded me of my three nephews when they started kindergarden. I was the proud aunt who went to all of their first days and watched them walk into their classrooms hoping that they would have nothing but good moments. I now have a niece that is in preschool and will be starting kindergraden soon and I cant wait to see how her first day goes!

I know everyone else has been saying this...but your story also reminded me of my niece. She just started second grade in Indiana, and so she is used to the full day, but I remember talking to her on the phone about her first day of first grade. She sat on the phone with me for a long time telling me every detail of what happened. At the end of the conversation, I asked her if she thinks she is going to like first grade, and her response was a quick "no." When I asked her why, she said "I have to sit at my desk for too long!"
