Could We Have Made a Difference?
We went to California this past weekend to surprise my daughter for her 30th birthday. We also spent some time in San Francisco shopping and exploring. I am always interested in the number of homeless and panhandlers there are in that city. Probably because they won't freeze to death like they would here in Salt Lake in the winter. My friend, the doctor, always says the street people range in behavior from too much medication, too little medication or needs medication. During this visit my thoughts wandered to what each of these human beings experienced during the early childhood years. Did what happened (or what didn't happen) from birth to 8 play a major role in the fact that they are now homeless? Was their early childhood a factor in the many cases of being mentally compromised? I have always believed all of our experiences create who we become. I found myself wondering if nurturing experiences during early childhood would have made a difference in some of the cases.

I think nuruting experiences during childhood do play a very important roll in the lives of children and when they become adults. It might not be so in every single case, but I don't think the percentage of homeless people is so hight among children who had a good home and life when they were young. Parents can influence children's lives when they are so young.

Many of our experiences make some impact on our lives whether it be small or immense. There are stories of people overcoming the odds, but most of the time it is too difficult. I believe that most children in unstable homes will likely need an outside source (teacher, mentor, etc.) to give the support to achieve a life of success. Success being meausured not by degrees or fortune but maybe by happiness or sanity. The question is, "Will the homeless man or women ever get the help he or she needs as an adult as was once needed by that child?" Sara Stahl- Community Center Dir.
People come into this world a certain way, and, although we have some control over how they turn out, unfortunately, we don't have as much control as we would like to have.
